The dental pulp, which is the inner soft tissue of the tooth, contains nerves, blood vessels, reparative cells, and connective tissue. If this inner pulp becomes damaged or infected due to trauma or decay, your child’s tooth may require endodontic treatment. Endodontics is the branch of dental care that is focused on treating and studying the dental pulp. We offer four main types of endodontic treatment at ABC Dentistry RMR:
Pulpotomy (baby root canal) – This treatment involves removing the dental pulp in the crown of the tooth. The crown is the portion of the tooth that is visible above the gums. After removing the damaged tissue, our gentle pediatric dentist will fill the tooth with a medicated material and seal the tooth, often with a dental crown. Pulpotomy is generally recommended only for children and is not used on permanent teeth.
Pulpectomy – This type of endodontic treatment involves removing the dental pulp from both the crown and roots of the tooth. The tooth is then filled with a medicated material and sealed with a restoration like a dental crown.
Root canal therapy – A root canal is the common term for root canal therapy, which involves removing the infected tissue from the crown and roots of the tooth. The root canals are then cleaned and shaped and filled with a permanent filling. Finally, the tooth is sealed with a crown for protection.
Apexification - This is the treatment of a tooth that is not completely formed and needs medications placed within the tooth to promote full root formation prior to final restoration.
